Fine Art

Sometimes you come across something which at first seems ordinary, but upon closer inspection and study it has something interesting. I came across in a collection that I had bought a while ago, a letter from The Hague to Ghent (Belgium) from 1871. Not very special, except that it is old and has nice stamps. On the front the letter has two 5ct with dot stamp The Hague and a so-called "two-letter-cancel" 's-Gravenhage and on the back a cancel Hollande par Nord 2 and a cancel from the city of Gand. The letter left The Hague on August 16, 1871 and arrived in Ghent the next day via Antwerp. Fun but not very exciting. Until I started to read more closely the address of the receiver. To: "the Board of Directors of the InterNational Exhibition of Fine Arts in the Cafino in Gend" The sender wrote national first and later corrected himself by trying to write "Inter" in between. Royal Museum of Fine Art Antwerpen

Some things in your life, you are pleasantly reminded by new issues from different countries. For example, the Belgian post office is issuing a sheet of stamps today on the occasion of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA). In the past, when I was still young, I regularly went to Antwerp with my father. A cozy city and also for the arts (my father was an artist). Of course we went to the Rubens house, we saw different architectural styles, including Art Deco and I drank my first Beer in a café on the main road called Meir. I was well under 18 and that would not be possible anymore of course. A regular part of our visit to the city was also a visit to the Royal Musem of Fine Arts. You could still just walk in and out; the entrance was free. Wandering through the different rooms you could quietly study the paintings. Usually there were not many visitors, only a single student who was copying a painting. Apparently a regular part of the art academy. ...

Forgeries (Italy)

Unfortunately, f orgeries are very common in philately. Especially for the rarer and more expensive copies. You have counterfeits of various shapes and sizes. Forgeries of whole pieces, reprinted stamps, renewed gum so that they are MNH again, false overprints, false cancels, etc etc. Sometimes they are so well done that even experts find them difficult or impossible to discover. Sometimes they are obvious. I recently came across one of the latter. This time from the area of Italy. Like many west-European countries, Italy had special post offices in the Levant/Asia Minor, for their trading settlements there. Regular stamps were overprinted, usually with the name of the place in question, but sometimes not. Likewise in Constantinople, present-day Istanbul.
